North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has yet to respond to a letter from 21 senators to expedite unemployment claims of military veterans, the state senate president posted to his Medium page on May 27.
"The Cooper Administration is failing to respond to military veterans’ unemployment needs and hasn’t responded to legislators who propose ways to fix it," Senate President Phil Berger (R-Caswell) posted.
The senators sent the governor a letter on May 20 asking him to provide more staff help to the state Department of Commerce process claims from military personnel and families, the release states. The senators suggested reassigning staff from the state Department of Military Affairs to help process claims.
"Over the course of 96 hours, 1,435 public comments were filed regarding your administration’s handling of unemployment claims, including some from military veterans who have been unable to speak with anybody at your unemployment insurance office," the senators wrote in the letter. “It is unacceptable that men and women who served our country cannot even get a response back from their government during their time of need."
