RICHMOND COUNTY SCHOOLS: Important Reminder on Student Medication (from page 8 of the RCS Student Handbook)

Physicaltheraphy

Richmond County Schools issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.

It is the policy of the Richmond County Board of Education to serve students who must receive medication during school hours. Medication is defined as being those substances recommended by a licensed physician or authorized healthcare provider being either prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter medications). Every effort should be made by the parent/guardian and physician to limit the need for medication to be administered to a student during school days.

School personnel may assist with the administration of medication to students if a medication authorization form is completed and signed by both the student's parent/guardian and healthcare provider. A medication authorization form must be renewed annually.

Prescription medication must be presented to schools in the original container labeled by a licensed pharmacist. Over-the-counter medications must be presented to schools in the manufacturer's original package.

All medication shall be transported to and from school by a parent/guardian or other responsible adult (the only exceptions are students covered by the self-administration law outlined below).

In accordance with G.S. 115C-375.2, students may possess and self-administer emergency medication for asthma and anaphylaxis as requested in writing from their healthcare provider and parent/guardian under certain parameters.

The student must demonstrate to the school nurse the skill level necessary to use the medication and any device that is necessary to administer the medication.

A student who uses his or her medication in a manner other than as prescribed may be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to the school disciplinary policy. The board does not assume any responsibility for the administration of medication to a student by the student, the student's parent or legal custodian or any other person who is not authorized by this policy to administer medications to students.
