Stokes County Fire & Rescue Association issued the following announcement on Aug. 7.
The Technical Rescue (TR) Wilderness block course will transfer as one “all or nothing” block to the Office of State
Fire Marshal (OSFM). Students must successfully complete all portions to receive certification credit for this block course.
This Technical Rescuer block course will present the student with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the
requirements of the Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications.
This block includes all four required parts of the Technical Rescuer (TR) Wilderness Rescue certification course series as
outlined by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission: FIP-6301 TR Wilderness Rescue Operations, FIP-6302 TR Wilderness
Rescue Rigging, FIP-6303 TR Wilderness Navigation & Tracking, and FIP-6304 TR Wilderness Victim Management.
Students must successfully complete all parts to receive certification credit for this block course.
Students will need to bring the following items: Flashlights / Headlamps WITH a red or green color option to
preserve night vision while being outside. Some type of small pack or rucksack to carry water, snacks, and some class
materials while operating in the field. A hydration pack or some type of water container large enough to sustain them
during field operations. Some type of walking stick, broom handle, etc. to aid in walking along the navigation courses and
to conduct the tracking practical's. Notepad and pencils / pens suitable for use in taking notes and working with maps.
Clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and walking long distances in a wooded, brushy environment.
Any personal medications to get through the weekend. For the second weekend, students will also need to bring an 8ʼ
x 10ʼ or 9ʼ x 10ʼ tarp for shelter construction, a sleeping bagor blankets suitable to spend the night outside.
Note: weekends will be very lengthy and students should be prepared for and plan on being outside for lengthy time
periods regardless of the weather conditions. We will be in the woods so proper footwear and clothing is ESSENTIAL.
