North Carolina Senate President Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) welcomed U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to the state to discuss school choice programs.

"It’s critical that all families in North Carolina and across the U.S. have the opportunity to choose where, when and how their students learn," DeVos said in an Oct. 6 Facebook post about the meeting

In the current reality of COVID-19, with parents and school districts struggling to find a balance between safety and ensuring a good education for students, Berger said in an Oct. 6 Facebook post that school choice has never been more important.

“The pandemic has increased demand for school choice options, and more parents are choosing to send their children to a private school or home school them,” Berger wrote in his post.

While the debate rages about how taxpayer money is spent in terms of school choice, Berger pointed out the hypocrisy of those who send their children to private schools but would deny others the opportunity.

“We believe that school choice should not be a privilege available only to those who can afford it,” Berger said in his post. “Parental school choice is a right, and the legislation that we passed in September aims to help families.”
