North Carolina Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) and fellow lawmakers recently called on Gov. Roy Cooper to return the state’s children to full time, in-person instruction, and Cooper partially relented, but Berger said more is needed.
Berger posted to his Facebook page on Sept. 18 that he and other state leaders have reviewed the most current data and the results in places that have permitted students to return to school, and they feel it’s time to bring students back.
“We’ve been watching the seven-day rolling averages for positive tests, daily deaths, and hospital capacity. Those are the key metrics we look at regularly to make informed decisions,” Berger posted to Facebook. “Thankfully, Gov. Cooper agreed with us and is allowing local school districts to open up their elementary schools for in-person instruction. It’s a step in the right direction, but all grade levels need the same option.“
Ultimately, Berger said that he feels that Cooper tends to “pass off political responsibility” on tough decisions such as reopening schools.
