A Stokes County Board of Elections members was arrested in August on 12 child sex charges, authorities said.
Elections board member Harold Lester Mabe, 63, was arrested at his Stokes County home on Aug. 12 by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Northern Piedmont District have arrested a Stoke County Board of Elections member charged with statutory sexual offenses with a child by an adult, authorities said in an Aug. 13 news release.
Mabe's bail was set at $1 million for a secured bond. He is scheduled for an appearance in court on Wednesday, Aug. 26, The Stokes News reported. He is being held detention center in Winston-Salem.
Law enforcement authorities said they started investigating Mabe earlier in August after a request from the county Sheriff's Office.
“We were certainly shocked by the news,” Stokes County Elections director Jason Perry told The Stokes News for its Aug. 13 report. “I’m talking with attorneys at the State Board of Elections on how to proceed.”
