Rockingham County Schools announced it be closed through Friday, March 27 at the recommendation of Gov. Roy Cooper.
Cooper recommended Sunday that all schools in the state close due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S.
"No staff member or student should enter the buildings at this time until further notice," the school district said in a March 14 statement. "Reopening procedures will be shared at a later time. Staff and employees will not be penalized for this break and we are in the process of determining what options will be available to you through this process.
"We are actively working on minimizing disruptions to learning at this time," the statement says. "We are also working on feeding options for our students at the location sites of Leaksville-Spray Elementary, McMichael High School, and Moss Street Elementary School. As soon as we have this information available we will share this as soon as possible. We believe this proactive response is necessary for the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff and community."
The recommendation came after the outbreak of the illness caused by the coronavirus started to increase around the state and a national emergency was issued.
