FOIA Request Sent to Rockingham County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Rockingham County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request was made by NC North Carolina News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The FOIA request seeks a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. Specifically, we asked for the candidates’ first, middle, and last names, the office they are running for, the jurisdiction of that office, and their party affiliation.

In addition to this information about each candidate’s campaign, we also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.

As a news organization dedicated to transparency and accountability in government affairs, access to public records is essential for us at NC North Carolina News. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver under the North Carolina Public Records Law. We await a response from the Rockingham County Election Department regarding our request.
